Pink Banana, also known as the Hairy Banana, is a tropical evergreen perennial fruiting herb in the Musaceae family, related to a wide variety of other
Bananas
. This cold-tolerant, dwarf variety is showy native to India, where it thrives in high humidity. The Pink Banana plant will remain evergreen in frost-free areas or die to the ground and return in spring when grown in colder regions (down to zone 8). It is commonly grown in containers with well-draining soil and thrives best when consistently moist in sandy, loamy soil.
Blooming gorgeous creamy-yellow flowers in summer, the flowers alone are reason enough to fall in love with the Pink Banana. These blossoms mature into fruity displays of pink, peach-fuzzy bananas which are sweet and seedy with white flesh. They sure are technically edible, but tend to be more ornamental due to their mouthful of hard seeds with each bite. Many enjoy the Pink Banana for the color pop of pink in their tropical landscaping, but don’t take our word for it, try it out for yourself! We love planting the Pink Banana amongst other bananas where it adds a blushing pink contrast to the other banana varieties.
