The Pineapple Orange is the oldest cultivated citrus variety in Florida, originating from seedlings planted around 1860 in Citra, Florida. The subtropical evergreen fruit tree is highly productive and cold hardy to 26 degrees, this thornless member of the Rutaceae (
Citrus
) family matures mid-season with a rich, sweet flavored fruit that many favor for snacking and juicing. Pineapple Orange fruit is medium to large size, round to oval, orange color, pebbly peel.
Its name originates from the delicate pineapple fragrance the blossoms emit, but the fruit itself doesn’t taste like pineapple. The Pineapple Orange is an excellent pollinator and ornamental addition, blossoming under dense canopies and creating a mid-season fruit which markets stock as a principal variety. The fruit bears an orange, medium-thick rind with a pebbled, aromatic exterior. Inside, the moderately seedy Pineapple Orange comes equipped with picturesque juicy flesh worthy of admiration and a spot in your Florida backyard!
